Overview

In this ongoing, confidential project, I am leading the design effort to establish how third-party applications and data integrate across Workday's platform. This initiative addresses various critical surfaces within Workday, such as our card framework, admin interface, homepage, search results, and microtransaction framework. For more information, please refer to Workday’s press release on the Experience Layer.

Strategic Vision and Cross-Org Collaboration

To set a unified direction for this complex integration, I collaborated with stakeholders from nearly every Workday business unit. Together, we defined a strategy for how third-party data would blend seamlessly into Workday’s ecosystem, prioritizing usability and cohesion across all touchpoints.

My role involved working with design leads for each UX area to ensure that our approach to third-party data integration would not only enhance functionality but also deliver a unified, intuitive experience for users across Workday. This cross-org collaboration helped establish a strategic foundation that made alignment across various teams possible, allowing us to execute with clarity and purpose.

Crafting a Cohesive UI and Design Language

One of my primary objectives was to create a design language specifically for third-party data integration, ensuring a cohesive and high-quality experience that feels consistent across all surfaces. I developed components and design assets that harmonize third-party data with Workday’s existing UI, carefully avoiding the visual clutter of disparate logos and brand elements. Instead, I created a streamlined, blended interface where all data—regardless of origin—conveys a single, unified system experience.

This meticulous approach to design enhances user trust and improves usability, as the interface feels visually seamless and easy to navigate. Each integration point is crafted to preserve both Workday’s brand integrity and the functionality of third-party data, delivering a balanced, high-quality UI.

Ongoing Impact and Alignment with Business Objectives

This strategy for third-party data integration is already showing promise, positioning Workday to better leverage external data while keeping user experience at the forefront. By establishing a cohesive design language and implementing it across Workday’s platform, I am setting the stage for a scalable approach to future data integrations. I look forward to providing additional updates and results for this case study as they become available.
